Today marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (30th July). It aims to raise awareness about human trafficking and to promote the rights of the victims of trafficking around the world.
Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index estimated in 2021 that there were around 50 million people living in modern day slavery around the world. Of this number, 12 million are children.
In the UK, the National Referral Mechanism (‘NRM’) – a framework and mechanism identifying and referring potential victims of human trafficking and modern slavery – referred over 17,000 individuals to the Home Office in 2023 as potential victims. The House of Commons Home Affairs Committee on Human Trafficking further estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims of modern slavery and human trafficking in the UK.
