Our Managing Director, Philippa Southwell lectured alongside other leading experts, Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi, D-G, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Debbie Ariyo OBE, CEO, AFRUCA Safeguarding Children, at the CJAG Effective Measures Against Human Trafficking & Modern Slavery talk on 9th September.
Philippa lectured the Modern Slavery Act and trafficking legal framework, as well as abuse of process arguments, the National Referral Mechanism and the admissibility of trafficking determinations in criminal appeals. Philippa spoke about the difficulties of helping trafficking victims navigate the criminal justice system, highlighting the importance of instructing intermediaries and addressing safeguarding issues by, for example, moving court hearings away from the defendant’s area of exploitation. Educating legal practitioners and other professionals working with those in the criminal justice system on trafficking indicators is crucial to identifying victims and convicting perpetrators.
Philippa Southwell specialises in cases involving victims of trafficking force criminality and forced labour. She has been involved in most of the leading non-prosecution and non-punishment cases in the UK in the last decade. To watch the full lecture, please see link below.
